A shadowgraph is a type of flow visualization, an optical method that reveals non-uniformities in transparent media like air, water, or glass.
The eye usually cannot directly see a difference in temperature in the transparent air. However, this disturbance refracts light rays, so they can cast shadows. The plume of hot air rising from a fire or cooking surface can be seen by way of its shadow cast upon a nearby surface by the uniform sunlight.
The shadowgraph on the left shows the capture ability of the BEST WPD39M Series range hood over an outdoor gas range and the shadowgraph on the right shows the lesser capture ability of competitive range hood V.
As you can see the BEST WPD39M Series hood captures smoke extremely well even at 36” compared to competitor V’s hood which shows a lot of heat, steam and smoke escaping, spilling over the front of range hood and escaping into the room.

Methodology: Used a Charbroil T-47-D Commercial Infrared Grill (4 burners). Grill lid located 3” from wall when opened (standard installation). Hoods on highest speed setting and mounted 36” above cooking surface. Used 10 feet of duct with one 90 deg. elbow at the end (no roof or wall cap). 6 burgers seared on medium heat setting (all burners). 4 burgers evenly spaced at front of grill. 2 burgers evenly spaced in the middle of the grill.
